FlySafe! ObstacleDetect is an iPhone and iPad application designed to support pilot situational awareness, particularly during low-level helicopter operations.
The app relates the aircraft’s position, heading and speed to the obstacle data available for the area. The map helps put recorded features into geographic context, while on-screen information and audible and visual alerts draw attention to obstacles identified by the system.
Operational insight from obstacle data
During flight, FlySafe! processes position and movement data and compares them with obstacles contained in the datasets loaded or available for the area. The information displayed depends on the coverage, accuracy and currency of the data in use.
Designed around the needs of low-level flight
FlySafe! was created to address a practical need: making obstacle information easier to access and interpret during low-level operations. The wider project also includes tools for preparing and managing data, documentation and support.

It is not a certified collision-avoidance system and does not replace flight planning, official aeronautical publications, operating procedures, visual observation or pilot judgement. Its ability to report obstacles depends on the quality and completeness of the available data.
